Harenchi Gakuen

Based on Go Nagai's ground-breaking comic strip, Harenchi Gakuen incorporated a great deal of panchira (panty shots) and sukarto meguri (skirt flipping), with most of the lead actresses revealing their underwear at one point or another. The film even concluded with a Benny Hill-style chase scene, complete with attractive young starlets losing their clothes to a runaway bus:

Spring is in the air.

More chaos ensues when the girls chase after the driver, demanding the return of their clothing (along with their dignity, one supposes), ably assisted by the local constable and various other aggrieved parties:

Insert "Yakety Sax" theme here.

According to Wikipedia and other sources, the original manga was highly controversial for its time (mainly due to its breaking of innumerable social taboos), though by 1970, the furor seemed to have died down to a dull roar. The film was successful enough to warrant three sequels, all of which employed the same basic formula.

Panty-Cam

Hey guise, what do you think of this idea: a visual novel where you can see upskirt pics of the girls' underwear? In fact, you can play the entire game in panty-cam mode and earn extra points by guessing the color of the girls' knickers!

A Bit of Sauce

A few more saucy postcards from the vault. Sorry, had to truncate this first one due to the left side of the image being a little "scrambled" during the scanning process; hoping to find a more complete version in the near future:

Next, a sentiment I suspect we can all agree with (guess it must run in the family):

Not sure if this one technically qualifies as the cancan, but the girls' suspenders hearts all seem to be in the right places:

Complete and Unabridged

"A rich and realistic French novel, complete and unabridged!"

While it's never a good idea to judge a book by its cover, I'd lay odds that the cancan has nothing whatsoever to do with the story, which apparently deals with the grueling chaos of war-torn France. Needless to say, any work of fiction set in Paris requires a reference to either the Moulin Rouge or le chahut, and this was probably the most eye-catching image the publishers could think of get away with at the time.

Well Placed Lines

It's truly amazing what an experienced artist can express with just a few well placed lines:

Even with the color removed, this simple pen-and-ink sketch tells us everything we need to know about both the dancer and the review she's performing in.

An Acquired Taste...

Adapted from a French postcard in BB's Tumblr collection. Literal translation: "There is no longer anyone here who tastes real bourgeois cuisine."

Gloire Soit!

Today, we have some old screencaps from the Glory Bee cartoons of the 1940s. According to Mark Donstein's Toonopedia, the animated shorts of the postwar period were collected and restored by Le Cine Achive De Paris and released in a DVD Boxed Set in 2006 (proving that French preservation societies treat animated material with far greater respect than the original American studios do themselves). However, as the Glory Bee Collection is only available in Europe, screencaps from the series are virtually unknown in America.
