Yes, the rumors are true: Ridley Scott started out directing TV commercials for Dim Lingerie in 1977. Lasting barely 40 seconds from start to finish, "Le Serveur" became one of the most influential campaigns in advertising history due to its exquisite visuals, subtle lighting and understated sense of humor. Viewed in retrospect, we can infer the reason behind Sigourney Weaver's gratuitous striptease at the end of Alien two years later.

Scala Revue
Haven't seen this since my college years, but recognized it immediately as one of the more iconic vintage ads for the cancan. Liberally translated, the caption reads something like: "the dance of the legs in the air" (The Dance of The Flying Legs, perhaps?).

Home Free
Following a long day at the office, the very first thing a girl wants to do is strip down to her knickers and model her sexy black garters in the mirror...
...according to this 2015 TV commercial, at least. Lingerie advertisements aren't known for their depictions of reality, but then again, fantasy has always reigned "Triumphant," so to speak.

Easy Shop Lingerie
Judging by these online adverts, Chinese retailer Easy makes shopping for lingerie so simple that pretty young women just walk in off the street and shed their inhibitions on the spot!
They've been toning the ads down somewhat over the past few years (evidently, they were considered quite risque by Chinese standards); fortunately, we managed to download a few of the earlier entries before they were deleted from YT (click the "start" arrow to begin, you may have to click twice).

More Vintage Lingerie Ads
"MATCHING BRA AND PANTIES with Her Initial!" And to think we could see advertisements of this kind in virtually any newspaper back in the day. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic...
"I can't wait to get into them!" Odd that an ad for Slimma Slack & Skirts would feature a girl in her bra and knickers, but then again, we're talking about the British tabloids here...

Why Pay More?
So, my good friend Daisy has finally fulfilled her life-long dream of being a runway model! During a recent visit to Courtland Plaza, she was offered five hundred dollars to model lingerie in the main concourse.
Note: in case you're wondering, this screencap is taken from a dress-up game I created a few years ago.

Stopping Traffic
Ah - the great ironies of life. It's always struck me as vaguely hilarious that while lingerie scenes were effectively banned from the Hollywood mainstream for over three decades, the printed media was literally saturated with cheesecake imagery - particularly newspapers and women's magazines. Many of the glossies opted for illustrations over photographs, and considering the level of quality, it's easy to see why.
Lingerie ads were often beautifully rendered in classic pin-up style, somehow managing to look both risque and tasteful at the same time. No need for racy pulps or Esquire calendars here, not when Ladies Home Journal featured artwork every bit as sexy as Vargas or Elvgren at their best. Common tabloids and mail order catalogs included much the same material as the more prestigious publications, making these visual delights available to everybody.
